Abu Dhabi provides major
opportunities for British
companies wishing to diversify
overseas, H.R.H. Prince Andrew, Duke of
York, told a packed lunch meeting of the
British Business Group on 8th March.
It is close to the key energy sources
of oil and gas and to key markets
and financial centres, while the UAE
has three international airlines with
excellent connection to other main
areas of global business like Europe,
the United States, the Indian subcontinent
and Australasia, he said.
Making the latest is what has
become a regular series of visits to
the UAE in his capacity as UK Special
Representative for International Trade
and Investment, Prince Andrew noted
that he was now using the Emirates as
his base for operations in the region
and emphasised the importance of
strengthening governmental and
economic co-operation between Britain
and Abu Dhabi.
He went on to praise the commercial
diplomacy of the Embassy staff, which,
he said, is adding considerable value
to British businesses in Abu Dhabi, and
urged BBG members to remind their contacts and suppliers in Britain of the
potential of the Gulf market.
During his visit, Prince Andrew met
with several key government officials,
including H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin
Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu
Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander
of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H. Sheikh
Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the
Foreign Minister, and H.E. Sheikha
Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Economy.
Paying a visit to the exhibition of the
Saadiyat Cultural District project at the
Emirates Palace, he was briefed on
the project by H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin
Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of the
Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, ADTA, and
its subsidiary, the Tourist Development
and Investment Company, TDIC.
"I am very excited to have seen the
plans for Saadiyat," he was quoted
as saying. "It is an ambitious and
innovative development, a cultural
beacon in the region."
Other engagements during his visit
included a focus on the oil and gas
industry, with visits to the offices of BP,
where he was briefed on the Abu Dhabi
sour gas project, and of Shell, and a
visit to the offices of Aldar for an update
on Abu Dhabi's major residential and
commercial development plans. He also
attended the signing ceremony for the
Ultra Advanced Transport System.
Many of the companies involved
in current development projects
have an 'environmental conscience,'
with 'energy efficiency' being the key
phrase, he noted in his speech to
the BBG, adding that this provided a
special opportunity for British energyefficient
businesses.
